Holly Ridge

The town of Holly Ridge, located on the border of Onslow and Pender counties, is a predominately residential community, surrounding the intersection of US Highways 17 and 50. With a land area of only 1.37 square miles and one stoplight in the entire town, it has quaint, small town charm while being conveniently located halfway between the Port City of Wilmington and Jacksonville, home to Camp LeJeune and the Marine Corps Air Station New River. Holly Ridge is both convenient and close to the beach and is the official gateway to Topsail Island. With only a 20 minute drive to Jacksonville or Wilmington and five miles to the beaches, this town has an ideal location and offers something for everyone!

Holly Ridge was incorporated in 1941 when 28 people lived in town. Two years later Camp Davis, an anti-aircraft, artillery training base, came to town and the population soared to 110,000. Life slowed down considerably after the closing of Camp Davis.

Today, with 1,180 full-time residents Holly Ridge is once again on the move. With the acquisition of Camp Davis by the Department of Defense planned for the expansion of Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Holly Ridge is expecting additional growth.

As a result, the town is changing rapidly as planned, residential build-outs over the next five to ten years have begun. New neighborhoods are springing up every day. Large numbers of new residents are coming to Holly Ridge every month and are taking advantage of the many brand new single family homes and condominium communities being built. Many people maintain second homes there to enjoy seasonal fishing at the nearby coastal facilities.

In terms of business and commercial development, Holly Ridge is still a small town with some businesses and a few industries, however, it is rapidly changing in anticipation of the influx of new residents to the town. Currently, there's a smokehouse restaurant on Hwy 17, a brand new 24 hour gym, post office and a Food Lion with deli, bakery and coffee shop. Other businesses scattered throughout Holly Ridge and close to Surf City include a dentist, nail salon, bank, auto repair shop, Dollar Tree a day spa, pizza place and a great Thai restaurant. The Annual Holly Festival is held in Holly Ridge and each year, it consists of a parade, rides for the kids, delicious southern-type food, vendors and craftsmen and great entertainment for everyone.

As mentioned earlier, Holly Ridge is undergoing quite a bit of housing growth with many new subdivisions sprouting up throughout the area. New construction. single family residential homes are currently priced between $165K - $280K while resale ones range from $140K - $325K with the majority between $170K - $275K. There are also many lots available to build on and range in price from $45K - $300K depending on size, with the majority between $60K - $140K. Resale condos and townhomes range from 120K - $135K.

The 2010 - 2011 city tax rate for Holly Ridge is $.415 per $100 of assessed value. The Onslow County 2010 - 2011 tax rate is $.585 per $100 of assessed value. More information can be obtained at the Onslow County tax rate website.
