As you leave Emerald Isle and travel east on NC 58, you enter the small, idyllic residential and resort town of Indian Beach, aptly named to commemorate the Indian burial grounds located there. Incorporated in 1973, the town has a total area of only 1.5 square miles and boasts a population of only 93 year round residents as of 2009. What’s interesting about Indian Beach’s location is that the town literally surrounds its unincorporated neighbor, Salter Path. So don’t be surprised when you drive through Indian Beach, then Salter Path and then Indian Beach again!
The stretch of land that comprises Indian Beach and Salter Path has deep roots as a coastal fishing village back to the late 1800’s. The area is said to be known as one of the main areas on the Bogue Banks where the shrimp industry began and is still very alive today as evidenced by the many fresh seafood markets and restaurants throughout the two towns.
As you drive through Indian beach on the main road, NC 58, you’ll be stricken by how lush and green the entire area is. This natural, thick maritime forest is on both sides of NC 58 and extends from Indian Beach all the way through Pine Knoll Shores. It’s hard to see many of the residences in these towns from the main highway due to the denseness of the trees, so take some time to meander down the side roads to really get a feel for what it’s like in the area. To the left is the ever popular Ocean Club, a family resort and conference center that offers condominium homes with elevator service
To preserve this ecologically sensitive area and ensure future generations can enjoy the beauty this maritime forest offers, ordinances have been adopted by the town that restrict how much a lot can be cleared if purchased to build a home. Given there are also minimum lot size requirements, you’ll find many gorgeous, upscale homes nested on very large lots nestled in the dense trees that surround.
Sunbathe along the unspoiled, uncrowded shore of Indian Beach. For family fun, rent a kayak, surfboard or banana boat from Water Sports Rentals located on the sound and finish off the day with a nice relaxing drink and watching the sunset at their Dolphin Tiki Bar overlooking the water. Or spend an afternoon at Lost Treasure Golf and Raceway playing a round of miniature golf, driving the go-carts or bumper boats.
For more to do, all you need to do is drive to any of the neighboring towns like Emerald Isle, Atlantic Beach or Morehead City and you’ll find a host of things to do from shopping, dining, art galleries, cruises, tours and festivals throughout the year.
In another nod to preserving the ecosystem and marine life here, theris also a turtle program run by volunteers from the NC Aquarium at neighboring Pine Knoll Shores. Many times, loggerhead turtles come onshore to lay their eggs and nest. Volunteers will mark off these sites on the beach so they remain undisturbed and visit frequently to check on the nest till the eggs hatch and mama and babies return to the ocean.
