Jacksonville has grown rapidly since 1941 when Camp Lejeune was established. Today, the city of Jacksonville makes up the largest population in Onslow County. Covering 45.2 square miles of eastern North Carolina, the Jacksonville that we know today is a much different place. A census taken in 2000 showed the population of Jacksonville at 66,715 people, which is a 122% increase from its population 10 years before in 1990. About half the population lives aboard Camp Lejeune and the New River Air Station. While the military is still a strong part of the culture, the once quiet farming community has grown into the business, retail, medical, banking and cultural center for Onslow County. Jacksonville is in the middle of a renovation of its downtown sector, converting aging historic buildings into beautiful examples of North Carolina heritage, inviting commerce and tourism to the downtown area. Conveniently located, Jacksonville has access to the Atlantic Ocean as well as inland areas via Interstates 17 and 258 and State Route 24. Jacksonville is less than a 30 minute drive to Topsail Island’s and Emerald Islands great beaches. These beaches are open to the public and there are many easy places park and access the beach. It is approximately 40 minutes from Wilmington and 15 minutes from the Intra Coastal Waterway. It is less than ½ hour away from Ellis Airport with daily flights provided by US Airways Express and Delta. |

| The Jacksonville real estate market consists of a varied selection of detached, single-family homes, townhouses, condos and undeveloped land. Jacksonville has many single-story ranches as well as more modern, two-story layouts. A large number of homes were built in the 1970s and 1980s, but older and newer, custom-built properties are also available. Prices for detached, single-family resale homes range from about $110,000 up to $600,000 while new construction homes range from about $130,000 up to $350,000. Typically, a budget of $300,000 could purchase a custom-built four-bedroom home on a large lot with a fenced yard. Resale condominiums and townhouses are priced from about $75,000 up to $120,000 while new construction ones range from $117,000 up to $280,000. Manufactured homes range from $90,000 up to $140,000.
