Pine Knoll Shores Homes

The peaceful, upscale coastal community of Pine Knoll Shores is located at the midway point on Bogue Banks with Pine Knoll Shores to the east and Indian Beach to the west. Incorporated in 1973, this small town spans just a little over two miles and has only 1600 year round residents, however, there is a large influx of tourists in the summer who come to enjoy the unspoiled beaches, emerald green waters and myriad number of attractions in the area from restaurants and shopping, boating and other water activities, local festivals, art galleries and more.

The history of the area dates back to the early 1500’s when it was first discovered by the Italian explorer, Giovanni Da Verrazzano. In recognition of this celebrated landing, there is a historic marker in the town along the main thoroughfare that runs through Pine Knoll Shores, NC 58.

The land that now makes up Pine Knoll Shores was first purchased by Mrs. Alicia G. Hoffman in 1917. It was eventually willed to her niece, the wife of President Theodore Roosevelt Jr. and her four children. The Roosevelt family envisioned a planned development of this area but with minimal impact to the environment.

Pine Knoll Shores HomesToday, local residents and visitors alike are grateful for the foresight of the Roosevelt family and other early town planners as Pine Knoll Shores combines coastal living with the harmony of nature. Pine Knoll Shores is nationally recognized as one of the most ecologically sensitive towns in America as evidenced by its “Tree City, USA” designation awarded by the national Arbor Day Foundation. Residents take great care to continue to preserve the natural ecosystem here and are very mindful in protecting the large sand dunes and maritime forest in the area. Town ordinances have declared the entire town a virtual bird and turtle sanctuary.

It’s only fitting that in this ecologically preserved Pine Knoll Shores Homesenvironment resides only one of three aquariums in the state. The North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is an absolute must see for anyone living or visiting the area. In addition to the over 1 million animals and fish housed at the aquarium, the facility offers a wide range of indoor and outdoor programs for both adults and children including surfing and fishing lessons, night treks to find turtle nests, kayaking and even snorkeling. Visitors can even watch as live divers swim and feed the fish in the Living Shipwreck exhibit.

Pine Knoll Shores HomesThe aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores is actually located in the Theodore Roosevelt Natural Area, a 265 acre natural preserve with nature trails, freshwater ponds and maritime forests to explore. The area is owned and maintained by the NC state parks system and the aquarium staff and is a favorite of hikers, bird watchers and other naturalists.

Pine Knoll Shores HomesAnother main attraction in Pine Knoll Shores for both year round residents and visitors is the County Club of the Crystal Coast located in Pine Knoll Shores. Offering 18 hole championship golf course, lighted tennis courts, swimming pool and clubhouse with dining and banquet facilities, the county club is the perfect place for wedding receptions, reunions or rehearsal dinners.

Being centrally located on Pine Knoll Shores HomesBogue Banks, there is always something to do in addition to relaxing and enjoying the breathtaking, unspoiled white sandy beaches in Pine Knoll Shores. With Emerald Isle only 15 minutes away to the west and Atlantic Beach and Morehead city as its eastern and northern neighbors, residents and visitors have a myriad of both water and land activities to choose from. Fresh and saltwater fishing, boating, eco and sunset cruises, kayaking, surfing, wind sailing are just a few of the many activities for the water enthusiast. History buffs can explore nearby Fort Macon, a Civil War fortress in nearby Atlantic Beach or the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort. Land lubbers have their choice of festivals to attend, restaurants to dine in, small shops to explore and a host of other activities.
