Richlands

Paying homage to its agrarian roots, Richlands was originally known as “Rich Lands” because of its fertile soil and farming history. Located approximately 12 miles west of Jacksonville on Hwy 258 and Hwy 24, this town is growing exponentially as a result of the new Hwy 24 bypass opening and is a very inviting alternative to those desiring to live in a rural setting outside of Jacksonville, the county seat of Onslow County, but still close to New River MCAS, Camp Lejeune and only 45 minutes from the beaches in Emerald Isle or Surf City / N. Topsail. For those who travel a lot, Richlands is also the home of Albert J Ellis Airport which offers daily flight to all parts of the country via Charlotte or Atlanta.

Dubbed “A Great Place to Grow”, Richlands prides itself on the fact that it has been able to maintain its family friendly, small town charm while also using new technologies and strategic planning to encourage commercial growth of local businesses. Incorporated back in 1880, the town has a historic central business district, a very active community and many turn of the century homes that are on the historic register. Walking the tree lined streets of Richlands, one is reminded of a time long ago when life was more peaceful and less hurried.

Although Richlands covers only 1.2 square miles and the population in 2007 was only 1071, Richlands has so much to offer for the many families, retirees and businesses that locate there. Known for its high quality of life, lower cost of living and excellent schools, residents enjoy the laid back lifestyle, warmth and southern hospitality of this quaint town. There are numerous places to go and activities to do in Richlands and the surrounding areas. Richlands Steed Park, located only 2 miles from downtown Richlands, contains 195 acres and offers a tot-lot, 2 basketball courts, picnic shelters, 2 tennis courts, an 18 hole disc golf course, 2 sand volleyball courts, shuffleboard court, horseshoe pits, soccer field, 4 field complex baseball and softball fields and an exercise trail.

There are several horse farms in the area offering boarding and riding lessons for area residents. Other outdoor recreational activities include fresh and salt water fishing, boating and other water sports in one of the many nearby rivers, lakes or the Atlantic Ocean. Nearby Hoffman Forest offers some spectacular nature trails for hiking enthusiasts.

For history buffs, Richlands is the home of the Onslow County Museum which features changing exhibits reflecting the history of the area.

There are a host of festivals and community events for locals to enjoy. Farmer's Day is an annual celebration of Richlands agricultural roots. For more than four decades, it has been held on the first Saturday after Labor Day each year. The day long celebration begins with a parade through town and attractions include live music, local vendors, mouth watering local food and games for the children.

To celebrate Onslow County’s heritage and traditions, the Onslow County Museum hosts an annual arts and crafts festival the first Saturday in November every year. Held in the downtown area of Richlands, families can stroll along the tree lined streets and sample some of the delicious food served by local vendors, listen to the sounds of live musical entertainment and shop till they drop selecting the perfect gift from a wide variety of handcrafted items including jewelry, pottery, woodcraft and much more!

Living up to its moniker as “A Great Place to Grow”, Richlands is undergoing quite a bit of housing growth with many new subdivisions sprouting up throughout the area. New construction homes are currently priced between $130K - $275K with the majority between $150K - $210K. Resale homes range between $130K – over $500K with the majority between $150K - $250K. Many in the higher price range usually come with significant acreage, a number of outbuildings and permit livestock. The 2010 - 2011 city tax rate for Richlands is $.37 per $100 of assessed value. The Onslow County 2010 - 2011 tax rate is $.585 per $100 of assessed value.
