Salter Path Homes

Located in the mid section of Bogue Bank, Salter Path is rich in history and folklore. Many believe the original settlers were displaced whalers and fisherman who left what was known in the 1890’s as Diamond City on Shackleford Banks, part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore, when the whaling industry declined and the area was hit by a series of particularly brutal storms. Legend has it that many tore their homes down piece by piece and carried them by boat and rebuilt them in the area known today as Salter Path. Recent studies, provided by the Duke Institute of Marine Sciences have also shown that Salter Path was a frequent refuge for the notorious pirate, Blackbeard.

There are various stories regarding how this community got its name. One version says a local fisherman by the name of Tom Salter would come to Bogue Banks daily, dock his boat on the sound and walk the same path to the ocean every day to catch fish. Legend has it that walkway became known as Salter’s Path. In another version of the story, it was said that schools of mullet fish that ran close to the sore were the prime catch for many of the natives. The local fishermen would quickly mobilize from the sound to the ocean, wearing a path in front of a Salter household, hence the name Salter Path.

Salter Path was originally a squatter’s community as many of those that relocated to Salter Path Homesthe area in the late 1900’s built home sites without deeds to the land. In 1923, a lawsuit filed by Alice Hoffman, the first owner of land in neighboring Pine Knoll Shores, resulted in the allowing the squatters and their descendents to remain on the land, however, the residents were not given title to the land. This actually continued all the way till 1979 when a legal settlement permitted Salter Path residents to hold title to their property.

As many of the longtime residents are descended from fisherman, quite a few of them still make their living harvesting the catch from the local Salter Path Homeswaters. As a nod to their heritage, Salter Path holds an annual Clam and Scallop Festival the first Saturday in May. With "Salter Path Clam Chowder," shrimp burgers and scallop fritters, it's a seafood lover's delight! There are many wonderful seafood restaurants and fresh seafood markets in the area including Frank and Clara’s, Frost Seafood House or for that very special nite out, upscale Carlton’s Restaurant located in the Ocean Club. If you’re just passing through and want something quick, every local will tell you that you absolutely have to stop at the Big Oak Drive In, known far and wide in the area for the absolute best shrimpburger you’ve ever had!

One thing interesting to note about Salter Path is it is entirely surrounded by the town of Indian Beach! When Indian Beach decided to incorporate in the early 1970’s, they asked Salter Path to incorporate as well, however, when Salter Path declined, Indian Beach simply incorporated around them! So don’t be surprised when you drive through Indian Beach, go through Salter Path and then drive through Indian Beach again!
