The village of Sneads Ferry is an active, commercial fishing village located on the New River near the northern tip of Topsail Island off N.C. Highway 172. The New River joins the Intracoastal Waterway at Sneads Ferry so access to the Atlantic Ocean is very easy. Across the river to the north on the mainland is US Marine Corp military base Camp Lejeune. Military personnel residing in the Sneads Ferry/Topsail area have easy access to the back gate of Camp Lejeune on Highway 172 via a hi-rise bridge. For commuters, Jacksonville is only a 25 minute drive north and Wilmington is approximately 55 minutes south.
Sneads Ferry is rich in history dating back to the 1700’s. Edmund Ennett was granted the first license in 1725 to operate a ferry in the Sneads Ferry area. Originally called the "Lower Ferry", Sneads Ferry was an important link for postal delivery between Virginia and South Carolina, as well as for news of Revolutionary War battles in the 1770’s. When Robert Snead took over as the new ferry operator in 1760, the "Lower Ferry" was renamed "Sneads Ferry" in honor of Mr. Snead. The ferry operated for more than 200 years before it was replaced by a wooden bridge in 1939. Today, the bridge is a new high-rise span.
The village of Sneads Ferry is believed to have first been settled in 1775, making it the oldest settlement in Onslow County. Today, two bridges allow access to the island — a swing bridge in Surf City and a high-rise bridge that connects Sneads Ferry to North Topsail Beach.
The primary industry in Sneads Ferry is commercial fishing and proudly boasts the fact that it takes in more fish than any other Onslow County port — more than 385 tons of shrimp, 25 tons of flounder and approximately 493 tons of other delicious seafood like clams, scallops, oysters, mullet, spot, grouper, sea bass, soft-shell and hard-shell crabs per year. First class seafood restaurants offering mouth watering fish fresh from the docks are abundant for both visitors and locals to enjoy year round.
There are three marinas in Sneads Ferry: New River Marina, Sneads Ferry Campground & Marina and Swan Point Marina.
There are a host of activities for families and people of all ages to enjoy in Sneads Ferry. The town honors the local fisherman with the annual Sneads Ferry Shrimp Festival the 2nd weekend every August at the Community Festival Grounds. People of all ages from all over the state come to this annual 2 day event.
Golf enthusiasts will love the North Shore County Club. It was rated as one of the Best Places To Play in their 2008-2009 survey. For those who enjoy a little bit of culture, there’s a wide variety of shows at the Sneads’s Ferry Community Theatre with productions including “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown”, “Murder in the Magnolias”, “The Odd Couple” and “Steel Magnolias”.
Although Sneads Ferry is only 3.76 square miles in size and had less than 2500 year round residents as of 2007, the area has grown in recent years and is now developing into a community of upscale housing developments yet still maintaining its attraction as a quaint fishing village complete with old world charm.
