Located 20 minutes south of Jacksonville and 40 minutes north of Wilmington off US Highway 17 is Topsail Island, a 26 mile long barrier island located approximately one mile off the NC coast. A single main road runs parallel to the ocean along the entire length of this narrow island.
Three communities are located on Topsail Island. On the northernmost part of the island is the town of North Topsail Beach. In the center of the island lies Surf City. South of Surf City to the southernmost tip of the island is Topsail Beach. On the island, you will enjoy some of the most natural unspoiled, sandy beaches on the entire eastern coast. Topsail Island has something for everyone: natural beauty, magnificent ocean views and sunsets, fishing, diving, boating, shell picking, family activities, shopping, golf, fantastic seafood restaurants and night clubs with live music.
The two mainland towns of Sneads Ferry and Holly Ridge complete the section known as the Greater Topsail Area. These areas feature golf, family activities, medical and shopping facilities and a wonderfully relaxing coastal lifestyle. Topsail Island is accessible only via a swing bridge in Surf City and a high-rise bridge that connects Sneads Ferry to North Topsail Beach.
North Topsail Beach
Incorporated in 1990, North Topsail Beach derives its name from its location - the northern end of Topsail Island. This is a residential community with oceanfront and sound front condominium complexes and rental cottages combined with single family homes of various sizes and styles.
With only two restaurants and a pizza shop, North Topsail Beach's visitors depend on Sneads Ferry or Surf City for most of their shopping and entertainment. Linked to the mainland in Sneads Ferry by a high-rise bridge, North Topsail Beach has a population of only 955 year round residents. Visit the towns official website here. The town has one fishing pier, three beach accesses, complete with rest rooms, showers and plenty of parking areas and a new community park with nature trails, basketball, volleyball, tennis courts and unobstructed views of the sound. Pristine, uncrowded beaches beckon families to visit from all over the country. A highlight for visitors is the Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehab Center, a sanctuary committed to the care and release of sick and injured sea turtles.

The city has an oceanfront welcome center, bike paths and a community recreation center hat offers a variety of classes from ballroom dancing to boating. The new Soundside Park at the swing-bridge is a perfect place to enjoy a picnic and watch the boats go by. Surf City boasts more than 30 public beach accesses, ranging from a simple access to four accesses with restroom facilities. The town's recent addition of Soundside park, adjacent to the swing bridge, provides public boat ramps, picnic and playground areas. At the north end of Surf City, on Broadway Ave, is a playground complete with parking area and restrooms.
The town plays host to the Surf and Turf Triathlon the third Saturday in May, a grand fireworks display that takes place at the Soundside Park on July 3 and a Christmas tree lighting in November.
In general, the entire Topsail area is experiencing significant growth, in both the residential and commercial sectors.
