Named after Samuel Swann, prominent in North Carolina's pre-revolutionary history as speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, this small 1.3 square mile town became an established seaport in 1786. The community's early prosperity was based on ship building; the first steamboat constructed in North Carolina was built in Swansboro by Captain Otway Burns. With the decline of the ship building industry, Swansboro was transformed into a bustling fishing port in the early to mid twentieth century.
